# When a mentor opens the route into a profession

This article considers dependence on someone who teaches, assesses and may provide an important reference. Students and postgraduate researchers with educational supervisors remain distinct from creative apprentices learning with an influential practitioner. Two fictional stories separate help, accepted duties and a new request without turning gratitude into unlimited agreement.

It may help a learner or early-career practitioner where disagreeing with one proposal feels like risking the entire path.

- Which powers does the mentor actually hold?
- How does a learning task differ from extra work or a personal demand?
- Why is a promised reference neither a letter nor a job?
- What exactly is being declined, and who is affected by a changed promise?
- What would make another support genuinely available?

No individual programme's rules or actual mentor are assessed. Safe refusal or complaint, a reference, place, continued funding and income are not guaranteed. Threats exceed an ordinary learning discussion.
