# Waiting to return to the front during leave or treatment

## Epigraph

> The future is neither wholly ours nor wholly not ours.

A short phrase from Epicurus, Letter to Menoeceus, translated by R. D. Hicks. This historical reflection concerns uncertainty. It neither demands an end to anxiety nor promises that danger exists only in thought.

## What this article is about

Some time remains before return: a confirmed date, an expectation or a decision still pending. Someone is home, travelling or receiving treatment, while deployment keeps entering today's conversations and activities. Rest may be difficult without any failure to appreciate the pause; the question of danger remains real. It need not be denied before present needs can count.

This article considers treatment without a race against the date, small tasks without a whole life to finish and family conversations without guaranteed promises. It determines no diagnosis, fitness, lawfulness or recovery interval. Scenes are hypothetical. Check present safety separately: leave and treatment guarantee no safe location. Threats to life need suitable urgent local assistance. Read in parts and stop; care matters without first learning to live calmly with the expected date.

## I. A known date does not describe every future outcome

A date may be confirmed, assumed or still under discussion. Those states differ. A confirmed direction cannot become mere anxious invention, yet does not reveal every future event. Uncertainty is no promise that danger will be cancelled either. Clarify what is known, its source, what requires checking and what remains unanswered. This is no technique for removing fear through correct phrasing. It keeps today's conversation from being assigned an impossible task: establishing everything after departure while guaranteeing the pause will be spent calmly and correctly. A specific fact can remain serious without becoming complete knowledge of the whole future or the person living towards it.

In [Letter to Menoeceus](https://classics.mit.edu/Epicurus/menoec.html), Epicurus cautions against complete certainty about the future and complete despair concerning it. Only that qualification is used here. It cancels no actual information about danger and blames nobody for anxiety. His views on death, fearlessness and invulnerability are not requirements for readers. Philosophy establishes neither a service decision nor treatment's course. Known circumstances and unknown parts can remain distinct without incomplete knowledge becoming false reassurance or a final sentence on the rest of life. The historical question has a limited purpose, rather than authority to tell someone that their present fear is mistaken or morally deficient.

Suppose a relative says uncertainty means there is no need to think about it. Disagreement requires no exhaustive proof of fear. Name one actual question: date, continuing treatment or contact. An absent answer remains unknown, rather than “everything will be fine” or “everything is lost.” Discussing future threats also replaces no protection against current danger. Each time has its own subject. Food, assistance and human company may matter now even when deployment has not been cancelled and certainty is unavailable to everyone involved. A conversation can recognise both parts without requiring either the future denied or today's needs postponed until an impossible guarantee appears.

## II. Leave need not become a perfectly used remainder of time

An approaching end may invite constant evaluation: enough rest, enough meetings, enough feeling alive? That accounting creates neither time nor capacity. An ordinary evening may be unmemorable, sleep may bring no immediate restored feeling and a conversation may remain unfinished. None establishes a wasted day. Essential care owes no particular emotion. Leave need not become final proof of having lived properly. Future danger does not turn the present into an examination where every pause must justify itself against a possible outcome. A modest experience can have a place without becoming the complete answer to what the remaining time should mean.

Imagine more meetings, household tasks and journeys than can be completed. Distinguish necessities, genuine wishes and promises made from fear of missing everything. Selecting one part does not devalue the rest; it identifies available scope. Others retain their time and consent; they need not organise an ideal leave on someone else’s behalf. A missed meeting may hurt without deciding a relationship's worth. Recognise limits, defer where possible or leave something open. A correct list cannot promise absent regret. An ordinary result can remain ordinary, rather than being assigned to complete a whole life within days. Its limits do not prove that the person failed to make use of the pause.

Others may insist on distraction, entertainment or exclusively serious use of time. Someone's answer may differ and change daily. Neither performed festivity nor rejected pleasure is owed as proof of loyalty to a future task. Consider conditions, needs and consequences. Risk, substances and impossible exertion are not prescribed to make the interval vivid enough. Significant distress needs suitable attention beyond more persuasive entertainment. Rest may be modest and incomplete without losing value because the date approaches and return remains on someone's mind. There is no required emotional account that must make every day look successful to observers before its ordinary care deserves a place.

## III. A present task need not cancel anticipation

An ordinary activity can coexist with awareness of deployment. Waiting need not stop completely before preparing food, handling a document or sitting with someone. A small action has its own subject; it need not treat every feeling or certify successful presence at home. Thoughts may return to the date during it without undoing what happened. Every interruption need not signify general failure. At the same time, substantial interference deserves appropriate attention beyond a command to focus on the present. One completed action can matter without proving the person has no difficulty, just as a difficult moment cannot establish all participation permanently unavailable.

Suppose a household question needs clarification while attention keeps returning to departure. Identify available information, contact or an action supported by present conditions. No promise to finish everything before leaving is required. Another person's consent and timing matter beyond one's inward urgency. Real fear grants no right to accelerate everyone at any cost. Sometimes the result is an open question with a known recipient: clearer than reassurance that everything will work out, but not yet a solution. Preserve that boundary instead of presenting preparation as delivered help or a completed obligation. A partial step can remain useful while the larger task still needs agreement and further action.

Not every choice must serve future military activity. Time together, food and rest also matter for the person themselves, without proving readiness. Missing capacity does not make the interval wrong; organisational help or suitable assessment may be needed. Reading and practice can stop. This article requires no constant self-observation, recording of every returning thought or daily productivity score. Present life should not become another job of managing anticipation flawlessly. A particular question can be considered without a promise to remove every other one permanently. The task can remain small enough to describe honestly, rather than being inflated into a complete recovery or acceptance of what lies ahead.

## IV. Treatment is not a race against the date

A known date may invite pressure to accelerate treatment, hide difficulty or declare everything hopeless. None follows from the calendar alone. Discuss expected return with appropriate expertise as part of care's actual conditions: what became harder, which later contact exists and what needs separate assessment? This article determines neither treatment nor fitness. Do not independently change prescriptions for a deadline, stop them to prove readiness or use danger to test results. Medical and service decisions have appropriate expertise and processes; anticipation does not combine them into one private examination of strength. The approaching date does not make someone their own clinician or decision authority.

Suppose complete calm feels compulsory by a particular day. Bring that expectation into the care conversation without making absent calm an established diagnosis or proof of failed treatment. Name the change and clarify the task. If the familiar format will be unavailable, continuation should not rest on an assumption of automatic arrangements. Who can receive the person, through which format and with what limits? A confirmed answer differs from possible addresses. An open part should not be hidden for a polished report of completed preparation. The actual gap can remain visible without declaring care pointless or requiring the person to solve every obstacle alone before they may ask for assistance.

Contact need not begin with the entire history. Clarify the recipient's role, necessary information and conversation conditions. This does not suggest withholding a significant safety risk from appropriate expertise. Confidentiality, record access and service consequences need checking in the actual setting; goodwill guarantees no specific rules. Immediate threats to life require urgent assistance without perfect organisational answers first. Preparing later contact replaces no current care, while care today does not become unnecessary because a decision about return remains ahead. That decision cannot be established by private determination alone. Several questions can stay distinct without any one of them being treated as a reason to abandon the others.

## V. Checking information need not produce complete control

Waiting may involve wanting to check the date, message or rumour again. This article assigns no mechanism or universal checking frequency. Distinguish a question requiring an actual answer from a promise that enough checks will finally secure certainty. The situation may make the latter unavailable. Actual contact requirements and deadlines should be considered through real rules. Checking and care need not be opposed in every instance. Ask what must be learned and whether the source can answer, rather than only briefly supply a finished feeling. The distinction concerns the task, without diagnosing a habit or prescribing a rigid information routine for every person in service.

Suppose one participant gives an expected date while another has not confirmed a decision. Keep those statuses distinct instead of promoting an assumption into fact. Clarify the competent recipient and applicable notification process where possible. This article suggests neither ignoring lawful duties nor inventing a limit on required service communication. Nor does clarification promise easy waiting. “Not decided” or “no information available” may be the only confirmed result. It cancels no anxiety but need not become a proven catastrophe. Present needs remain and are not postponed until the entire future is settled. An unanswered practical question can coexist with an ordinary action that is possible today.

Relatives may want to investigate everything on someone's behalf. Participation needs consent and actual authority, rather than following automatically from worry. Who speaks, what is needed and who can access information are separate questions. Avoid distributing others' data or turning the family into a continuous checking service. Someone struggling to organise contact can request particular help without surrendering all independence. A child is not appointed message monitor or intermediary for adult safety. Several supporters may have limited tasks; nobody must promise to discover and prevent every possible change for their contribution to count. A bounded request can preserve both assistance and the separate lives of those involved.

## VI. Joy beside anticipation requires no justification

Pleasure may feel inappropriate with danger ahead and others remaining there while someone eats, laughs or watches a film. Acknowledge the conflict without deriving a duty to refuse care. A good moment cancels no seriousness and proves no acceptance of everything. Loyalty requires no constant suffering. Equally, pleasure need not be produced on demand for leave to count as successful. Food, sleep and participation retain meaning without guaranteed uplift. A present need loses no legitimacy through laughter or through absent joy. Neither response has to certify the person's full attitude towards the war, the people elsewhere or the approaching date before ordinary care is allowed.

Imagine feeling good briefly during a meeting, then frightened again. These parts need not refute each other. The conversation can matter without being obliged to remove anticipation. Another person does not owe sufficiently strong joy or continuous maintenance of the right condition. Thank them for particular participation without declaring treatment or guaranteed safety delivered. A difficult meeting also decides no final verdict on closeness. Consider form, consent and present condition rather than demanding enough good feelings within the remaining days to supply the entire next period. Neither participant can honestly guarantee that store of reassurance, and the absence of such a guarantee does not make the relationship false.

Where almost nothing gives pleasure or other difficulties substantially interfere with life, seek suitable attention without self-diagnosis. [VA describes varied post-trauma reactions and questions of help](https://www.ptsd.va.gov/understand/isitptsd/common_reactions.asp); a general resource identifies no individual's condition. Absent pleasure does not establish spiritual depth, while one pleasant moment does not remove a need for care. Substances or danger are not assigned to restore vividness. Risk of harming oneself or another needs urgent actual local assistance. Without urgency, a present description can begin contact without first demonstrating excellent use of every day of leave. Support need not become the reward offered only after someone has exhausted all efforts to relax correctly.

## VII. Closeness need not complete every relationship before departure

Someone may want everything discussed, reconciliation or final assurance of love before return. Those wishes can matter while others retain consent, pace and history. An approaching date grants no right to force a meeting, forgiveness, intimacy or disclosure. State a particular request with room for a limited response. Refusal may hurt without proving the connection never mattered. Some relationships remain unfinished. No correct conversation guarantees closure or obliges another person to provide calm before danger regardless of what happened between them and which contact is now acceptable. The wish can be heard without becoming authority over someone else's boundaries or a final measure of their care.

Suppose one practical question sits beside a major conflict. With consent, separate them: conveying necessary information does not settle everything. One topic may suit limited discussion; another needs time or separate help. Agreement about aims cannot be guaranteed. [VA addresses family changes and boundaries around service transitions](https://www.ptsd.va.gov/family/effect_deployment_stress.asp), without requiring one shared emotion. Relatives' participation can be real and incomplete. Their needs survive the date, while distress does not become false because every response differs from what was wanted. A limited conversation can retain its actual result without certifying reconciliation or supplying all the support either person may need in the remaining interval.

An ordinary meeting need not become a compulsory final memory. Photographs, discussion or quiet activity may be wanted, but symbolic completion of an entire history is not owed. Consent includes recording, publication and details shared. Threats and violence require protection rather than hurried reconciliation. Departure or distress excuses no safety violation. Suitable support can have several recipients, with relationships and treatment kept distinct. Closeness is not proved by someone abandoning every boundary for another's remaining time and then staying silent about its cost. An important wish can still have limits, and those limits do not automatically cancel the relationship's entire meaning or deny the seriousness of the situation.

## VIII. A child is not responsible for keeping an adult in the present

With separation ahead, time together may matter intensely to an adult. Children also bring needs, age and their own pace. They must not be made responsible for making every day happy, monitoring the adult or securing safety through promises of good behaviour. Family anxiety is not theirs to remove. Contact can be ordinary: manageable activity, questions, play or pauses. It need not certify successful parenthood completed by a date. A child's feelings may differ from the hoped-for mood and solve no adult waiting task. Those feelings do not decide whether love exists, nor should their expression become another demand the child must meet to protect the adult's state.

Suppose a child wants to continue an activity while the adult feels time slipping away. Recognise the importance of contact without accusations of ingratitude or absent love. Adult responsibilities remain regardless of desired closeness achieved. Discussion of separation depends on age and conditions; this article supplies no universal script or guaranteed response to one phrase. Unverified safety promises should not buy immediate calm, but adult danger details are not the compulsory price of honesty either. Suitable guidance may be needed instead of solving the entire conversation alone just before departure. A difficult exchange is a particular event, rather than a complete verdict on the whole relationship.

Supporting adults can have separate contacts so the child is no sole listener. Unsafe homes need protection. Children must not be expected to identify risk and organise help in time; adult safety remains an adult task. One unsuccessful evening defines no entire bond, while a warm one cancels no later needs. Preserve a small real result without treating it as a complete reserve of closeness for the future. Relationships have histories that cannot be finished or secured within a fixed number of days, even when everyone deeply wants to offer whatever is available now. The importance of the time does not make impossible promises more reliable or more appropriate.

## IX. Preparation does not mean experiencing return beforehand

Wanting readiness may become a demand to imagine every worst possibility. This article prescribes no such rehearsal as preparation or treatment. Organisational tasks have particular subjects; detailed imagined danger does not therefore become a necessary exercise. Neither sleep deprivation, exertion nor approaching danger should test endurance. Health and task safety need appropriate expertise and conditions. Inability to feel calm beforehand makes no one morally worse. A present question can be raised without proof of having imagined the entire coming period without distress or mistakes. Preparation has actual limits, and one person's effort cannot supply certainty about every condition after departure.

Suppose returning to an ordinary task is hard after discussion of the date. A cause need not be assigned alone, nor should still more danger detail be made the required solution. Stop an unwanted conversation where actual conditions allow, identify a need and seek appropriate support. A pause guarantees no relief. This article gives no memory-treatment protocol and requires no detailed account to every helper. Significant difficulty deserves qualified attention. Medical, administrative and human assistance may coexist, rather than one conversation replacing everything and instantly certifying readiness. Its role can be clarified without treating the person's continued difficulty as proof that they have refused to prepare correctly.

A familiar task guarantees no safe outcome either. Prepare an available part without assuming responsibility for every circumstance. Today's result settles no whole future; a missing result makes anticipated danger no personal fault. Retain actual obligations and limits rather than complete control or complete helplessness as universal formulas. Precise service information needs a competent recipient and local checking. Philosophy does not establish that answer on the person's behalf. It can leave room for the question while practical answers need their own evidence. A bounded action remains different from certainty, and neither courage nor a persuasive account can make those two results interchangeable.

## X. An approaching date does not remove the right to report change

It may feel too late to mention difficulty once plans, expectations and documents exist. Yet proximity tells neither whether a task is safe nor what health requires. Significant changes can go to appropriate expertise through the actual process. This article promises no changed decision and establishes no grounds for exemption or delay. It also suggests no hiding of material risk to preserve an earlier agreement. Respect for consequences includes clarifying current facts rather than treating an old plan as a permanent conclusion about someone regardless of later changes. The subject is the actual situation, not whether the person has remained consistent with every earlier expectation.

Suppose information was sent but no answer received. Separate action from outcome: transmission occurred, no decision is confirmed. Assumption cannot become permission or promised help. The next step depends on actual rules and competent participants. Legal assessment needs separate current local verification; general support is no such opinion. Immediate danger requires urgent assistance beyond ordinary correspondence. Without urgency, clarify stages without perfect calm as the qualification for asking what will happen and who can explain. An unsettled answer may remain difficult while the question stays legitimate. Neither silence nor a friendly response should be made to certify a result it does not establish.

After a reply, clarify its actual meaning. An offered appointment is not delivered care; a decision is particular, not a guarantee of the future. Necessary arrangements and support can be discussed within real limits. Nobody must promise absent fear. Relatives retain consent and needs; the date makes no request an unconditional claim on their capacity. Personal difficulty also survives completion of a procedure. Healthcare, human participation and administrative results can still have different tasks and recipients after one official answer. A specific result may matter without settling the entire waiting period, and further needs can remain visible without pretending nothing at all was achieved.

## XI. Today's small result can matter without a guarantee for tomorrow

Why do ordinary things with danger ahead? A complete philosophy need not precede an answer. Food is needed now, an agreement concerns a present person and help may be actual today. This promises no compensation for the future or freedom from fear through appreciation of the moment. A small result has limits and value. It need not justify war, cancel loss or make the date welcome. Care can be received without agreement with events or a claim of becoming stronger, wiser or ready for anything. The present action does not have to turn the whole history into a benefit before it deserves attention.

In [Mark 6:30–44](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+6%3A30-44&version=KJV), returning apostles' needs receive a place in a continuing story. Here this concerns rest, neither military rules nor neglecting one’s own needs because events continue afterwards. Rest need not end a history to matter within it. The Epicurean qualification and Christian narrative have different grounds, forming no clinical recipe. They neither promise safety nor forbid anxiety, and they require no isolation. Needs are not diminished because one quotation cannot resolve an actual medical or service position. A source may offer a question within its limits, while the answer about the person's circumstances still requires appropriate practical attention.

Uncertainty can coexist with clarifying a contact. An ordinary evening can be followed by anxiety; loved ones can matter while relationships remain unfinished. These possibilities leave room for present life without denying future danger. Neither gratitude for the pause nor effortless rest is compulsory. The future retains known and unknown parts. Today's action may be small, supported and unfinished. It does not need to guarantee tomorrow to mean something, and further care is not earned through a calm, convincing story of complete acceptance. A person can remain in an unresolved situation and still receive attention to what is actually needed now, without a final emotional verdict demanded first.

## What this means in practice

Check present safety. Threats to life, violence or danger of harming yourself or another need suitable urgent local help. Leave and treatment guarantee no safe location. Do not test readiness through danger, sleep deprivation or increased exertion.

Without urgency, distinguish confirmed, assumed and unknown date information. Find the appropriate recipient and actual process for one needed answer. Uncertainty guarantees neither cancellation nor catastrophe. Particular service rules and legal consequences need separate checking.

For treatment, describe the current change and continuity question. Who is available, which format is confirmed and what remains unagreed? Do not change prescriptions independently for the deadline. When circumstances allow, clarify role, data and confidentiality exceptions before significant information. A planned contact is not delivered care.

Choose one task through its subject and available conditions. You need neither finish a whole life nor produce a particular emotion before return. Reading, practice and unsuitable conversation can stop. A small result need not remove anticipation to matter.

Discuss a particular request and consent with loved ones. A date grants no right to forced meetings, forgiveness, intimacy or permanent soothing. Children are responsible for neither adult readiness nor safety. They retain needs; adult distress needs adult support.

Afterwards, distinguish what occurred from what is open: question asked, answer received, agreement confirmed or help delivered. None guarantees the entire next period. Food, sleep and care are no reward for waiting correctly. Return to them without promising instantly absent anxiety or treating today as the end of an entire history before a confirmed or expected date.

## Key quotation

> And rest a while.

Mark 6:31, King James Version. An invitation within the Gospel episode about apostles, not a recovery period, readiness guarantee or isolation requirement.
