# When trust is difficult but help is needed

After war, violence and betrayal, approaching people may be difficult. Distrust alone establishes no diagnosis. Responsibility for another's violence does not transfer to someone who trusted and failed to predict everything.

Everything need not be trusted at once. One task, a helper's role and conditions can be clarified without a complete account. Conversation permits no automatic publication or control. A reassuring name and familiarity guarantee neither competence, privacy nor safety.

Promise, apology, changed behaviour and repair are different events. Forgiveness, reconciliation and trust in particular participation also differ. None must purchase support. Do not test trust through danger, sensitive information or loss of needed assistance.

Persistent difficulties affecting life can warrant suitable professional assessment without full disclosure before a first question. Current threats deserve separate attention. Immediate danger, serious deterioration or inability to maintain safety requires appropriate available local urgent help without waiting for restored trust or discussion with the person causing harm.
