# When forgiveness is expected of you

After war, advice to forgive can mean different things. Sometimes a person wants to explore it. Sometimes one word carries expectations of meeting, restored trust, abandoned questions or a public statement. Understanding the actual request may come before answering everything at once.

Forgiveness, reconciliation, trust and responsibility are different questions. A changed attitude makes no harm good and requires no forgotten past. An apology alone confers no entitlement to a meeting, reply or personal information. Dangerous contact need not prove generosity.

The word may remain unused, or its personal meaning uncertain. This proves no wish for revenge. Chosen forgiveness may also be valued without making it a rule for others. Different religious and secular meanings require no single public answer from every harmed person.

Present help should not await a morally convenient feeling. Difficulties substantially affecting life may warrant suitable assessment without trying every self-directed approach. Immediate danger, serious deterioration or inability to maintain safety requires appropriate available local urgent help without waiting for forgiveness or a meeting.
