# GROW-130 — self-harm and not wanting to live

## Audience and decision

Parents, caring adults, and young adults aged eighteen and over asking how to take a report seriously and connect actual assistance without blame, home risk classification, or responsibility left to a child.

## Content

Suicidal words cannot be cancelled by assumptions about anger or attention-seeking. Self-harm does not always mean intent to die, but the distinction provides no safety certificate. A calm direct question opens conversation without replacing assessment. Listening differs from interrogation, protection from punishment, and necessary sharing from publicity. Physical care and emotional support do not replace each other. Professional safety planning differs from a “never again” promise. Ordinary life and enjoyment are no proof of recovery.

## Accessible step

Hear seriously and ask directly without suggesting denial. An adult takes specific arrangements and tells a qualified service knowns and unknowns. With few resources, use an accessible local urgent route rather than search for an ideal private professional. Clarify care, environmental safety, actual contacts, and follow-up. Section VIII examines daytime/evening access gaps without handing vigilance to a younger sibling. Section IV offers a gentle response and optional reading only later without urgent threat. A peer involves a safe adult rather than promises to carry everything alone.

## Limits and urgency

Suicidal talk, unsafe behaviour, or self-harm calls for immediate appropriate contact. Immediate danger requires local emergency assistance or urgent medical care. Do not await reading, a second event, complete explanation, or family agreement. If someone says they are going to kill themselves, do not leave them alone; connect urgent help with safety and service guidance in mind. Do not assign this to a child. No methods, home scale, physical restraint, independent medication changes, or guaranteed outcome. Clarify confidentiality locally; promise no absolute secrecy and create no unnecessary publicity.
