# Intellectual disability: adult communication and participation in decisions

UW:LHD-115:en r01. Subordinate representation of ARTICLE_EN.md; DELIVERY.json binds exact versions. Production acceptance and publication NOT_RUN.

## Short answer

The article helps arrange accessible explanation and meaningful adult participation without a small-child manner of address. Support needs, understanding, and legal authority differ. Communication should preserve the person's position, essential information, and actual options. Relationship or care experience does not automatically transfer every decision to a supporter.

## Main points

- Intellectual disability is not established by one conversation, score, or impression; the article conducts no diagnosis.
- Understandable adult speech differs from a childish tone. Language can become simpler without diminishing dignity.
- Options must be real and explanation must not steer towards a predetermined answer. Two names for one result do not create choice.
- Difficulty speaking does not establish a lack of understanding. An unclear gesture, silence, or smile is not declared confident agreement.
- The person's words, help expressing them, and others' interpretation differ. A supporter's convenience does not establish the adult's preference.
- CRPD and domestic procedures occupy different levels. The NICE/Mental Capacity Act example concerns England and Wales, rather than every country.

## Questions and answers

**Where can the conversation start?** With a particular decision, which information matters, and an accessible way to explain it. A general assessment of adulthood is unnecessary.

**How is communication chosen?** With attention to the person and appropriate support. Speech, visual, and other methods are not prescribed by diagnosis. Buying an app is not required.

**What does a supporter do?** Help understand, express, recall, or make contact within an agreed task. Representation, medical consent, and data access require separate grounds and checks.

**What if family or money is absent?** A brief spoken request for explanation and a question about who provides an accessible format here can start. Independent help, safety, and free provision are not promised; a random person need not receive the whole history.

**What outcome can be checked?** What was explained, whose position recorded, which options confirmed, and what support remains needed? A completed form does not replace the conversation's substance.

Visual and intellectual disability are not equated; rational nature becomes no dignity test. Capacity and authority are not determined, and no treatment or training protocol is prescribed. Acutely dangerous deterioration requires help appropriate to urgency; there is no universal safe wait. Clinical, legal, independent, native-language reviews and actual reader testing NOT_RUN.
