## Question and reader

Adults aged 18+ without a settled explanation for mental distress, and a supporter they choose. Question: how can I begin seeking help without knowing a condition's name? Benefit: distinguish experience, explanation, urgency, and an accessible entry; formulate a request without self-diagnosis.

## Short answer

Begin with one change or persistent difficulty, its effect on life, and the help wanted. A diagnosis, completed questionnaire, diary, or orderly biography is not required beforehand. Taking suffering seriously does not establish a proposed cause. A description supports conversation and appropriate assessment.

## Essential distinctions

- “I am struggling” reports experience; a disorder label proposes an explanation requiring assessment.
- Completed work does not reveal its full cost: food, contact, and energy for the rest of life may disappear. If others sustain the result, that support can be named; withdrawing it to prove a difficulty is unnecessary.
- Physical changes, treatment, substance use, and living conditions may matter to an account. A sequence in time does not establish causation. An unfound explanation remains unknown; an earlier investigation without findings does not by itself establish a psychological cause.
- Support needs need not wait for diagnosis. A positive depression screen is not a diagnostic conclusion; a low result does not erase a reported difficulty.
- Preferred communication conditions differ from the task of help. A pleasant interaction alone does not establish qualifications.
- A chosen supporter may assist with appointments and communication while preserving the adult's voice. Disclosure to an unsafe relative is not required. A friend's presence is not professional assessment or uninterrupted safety monitoring.
- A manageable action depends on communication, place, energy, and actual service access. A queue or unanswered call is not personal failure. Enforced waiting should not be presented as a freely chosen pause.

## Urgent boundary

Immediate danger, severe acute deterioration, or a risk of harming yourself calls for available local urgent help without waiting to read or practise. The text does not determine individual risk or set a safe waiting period. An ordinary future appointment is not urgent help already received. No specific telephone numbers or treatment schedules are supplied.

## Accessible application

In a non-urgent situation, three phrases may help: “I have noticed…”, “What gets in the way is…”, “I would like…”. Any part may be omitted. With little energy, “I am struggling mentally; please help me work out where to turn” can begin the request. Writing, a usual communication method, and a chosen person's assistance are options; a family or telephone is not assumed. When a channel is inaccessible, name the obstacle and seek another real contact. Distinguish a message sent, receipt confirmed, and an accessible meeting actually arranged.

## Internal corpus navigation

MHR-B01 concerns professional roles; B03 the first meeting; B05 cost, distance, and queues; B04 confidentiality; A07 unexplained symptoms; L01–L07 crisis questions. These are internal identifiers rather than published URLs or service contacts. A person may seek help directly without choosing an article or completing the map.

## Grounds and limits

Clinical grounds: [NIMH, Do I Need Help?](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/my-mental-health-do-i-need-help), daily impact; [Psychotherapies](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/psychotherapies), physical health questions; [Caring for Your Mental Health](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/caring-for-your-mental-health), a possible first contact; [USPSTF 2023](https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/recommendation/screening-depression-suicide-risk-adults), Screening Tests and population. The latter concerns preventive screening in a defined US adult population, not assessment of every individual reader.

Philosophical and religious grounds: [Plato, Apology 21d](https://classics.mit.edu/Plato/apology.html), limits on knowledge claims; [Epictetus, Enchiridion 1](https://classics.mit.edu/Epictetus/epicench.html), limits of control; [Luke 10:25–37 KJV](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%2010%3A25-37&version=KJV), material conditions of care. These compare a human question; they do not establish treatment effects, a shared doctrine, or medical law. Symptoms are not declared subject to willpower.

## Do not infer

Do not diagnose, guarantee safety, prescribe waiting periods, investigations, or medication changes. English does not determine jurisdiction; local services and legal conditions require separate checks. An article, GEO, or author receipt does not establish clinical, native-language, independent editorial, or human acceptance, import, indexing, or publication.
