You Are That: Advaita Vedanta as a Formula of Recognition

The essay presents Advaita through the witness/observed distinction, removal of superimpositions, and tat tvam asi. It compares the tradition with hesychasm, Zen, Sufism, and philosophy of consciousness. These comparisons do not prove identical doctrines: a neural correlate does not establish Brahman, and Metzinger's self-model account does not establish ātman.

Questions explored

Why compare translations of tat tvam asi?

The author contrasts the familiar ‘You are That’ with the pointing formulation ‘And that is how you are,’ reading the phrase as an invitation to recognition rather than only an equation.

What does adhyāsa mean?

In the article's account of Shankara it is superimposing one thing's properties on another. A rope mistaken for a snake illustrates knowledge removing a mistake without creating the rope.

Where does neti neti lead in the essay?

Toward distinguishing body, feelings, and thoughts from awareness. This is a religious-philosophical framework, not proof of an entity independent of the brain.

Is turīya one more experience?

The essay presents it as the ground of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep, rather than an additional item on a menu of experiences.

Does neuroscience prove Advaita?

No. Even a reported neural correlate concerns participants' experience and does not establish Advaita's metaphysical truth. The studies were not newly evaluated here.

What three dangers are identified?

Flattening the teaching into ‘all is one,’ using spirituality to avoid unresolved experience, and intellectualization. The article retains ordinary suffering and responsibility.

Key distinctions

Tat tvam asi has differing translations and interpretations. (Brereton and Olivelle as presented in the archive)

Adhyāsa is illustrated through the rope and snake. (Shankara as presented by the article)

Hesychasm does not equate human and divine essence. (Article's account of Gregory Palamas)

Scientific correlates do not establish Advaita's metaphysics. (Article caveat and current GEO limits)

The Metzinger/ātman comparison is an authorial analogy, not an established identity. (Article authors)

Limits of interpretation

  • Do not present religious metaphysics as a scientific finding.
  • Do not infer identical traditions from similar descriptions of experience.
  • Do not equate Metzinger's self-model with ātman.
  • Do not deny suffering, responsibility, or bodily needs through ‘all is one.’
  • Quotations, dates, and neuroscience claims are inherited, not newly verified.
