A guide can be clarified through action, timing, standpoint, and grounds. An unmet wish does not automatically establish the entire person’s unacceptability.
Questions explored
Does actual self mean accurate knowledge of the whole person?
No. In this theory it is a representation of present attributes from a particular standpoint.
Must someone possess all six representations?
The distinction allows possible forms, but Higgins does not expect all guides in everyone. It is not a compulsory reader checklist.
Does an inner “must” prove an actual duty?
No. A represented obligation needs a separate examination of its grounds and relevance to the task.
Should current and ideal images be averaged?
No. An arithmetic midpoint answers a numerical question; Aristotle distinguishes it from a suitable measure for a case.
Does a more moderate ideal always improve experience?
The article establishes no such claim. Attainability, action, and permissibility differ, and the selected discussion retains open questions.
Can the practice be used as a psychological test?
No. It contains no original instrument, scoring, or classification rules. It examines one attribute and action.
Key distinctions
Higgins’s actual self is a representation of present attributes rather than the entire factual person. (E. Tory Higgins, definitions on pages 320–321.)
A desired attribute and a represented obligation are different kinds of guide. (Higgins’s selected definitions; ought does not certify moral duty.)
A represented other standpoint does not establish another person’s actual expectation. (Editorial implication of Higgins’s distinction, applied to fictional Olga.)
A growth direction can be discussed through a specified action and its checking. (Original invented case; James supplies a historical distinction concerning selected pretensions.)
The arithmetic midpoint between two and ten is six; the measure’s suitability requires separate grounds. (Aristotle II.6 and an original numerical case; no calculation of virtue or self-image.)
Not every action has a right mean in the Aristotle passage read here. (Aristotle II.6, neighbouring qualifications of the epigraph clause.)
Individual descriptions and experimental conditions have their own research limits. (Higgins’s actually read selected methods and general discussion; not a complete account of all findings.)
The practice reproduces no questionnaire and establishes no personal condition. (Original optional practice, without established efficacy.)
Limits of interpretation
- The material distinguishes representations’ content and a guide’s purpose. It establishes no diagnosis, compulsory set of guides, another person’s actual thoughts, universal emotional cause, or exercise efficacy. Six explains an arithmetic midpoint, not an averaged personality; ethical measure and psychological theory remain distinct.
