Traits, states, and circumstances: three scales of description

A trait generalises a tendency, a state describes a limited episode, and circumstances name conditions. These are working distinctions for a note; one conversation establishes neither causes nor another's inner experience or stable profile.

Questions explored

Does silence show another's inner feeling?

It can be an observed action; a particular feeling/intention needs its own grounds and is not reported by silence alone.

Do different conditions prove a cause?

No. A checked difference in conditions can be named without establishing a single cause of behaviour.

Was the whole scientific paper read?

No: completeoriginalabstract/selectedparts, methods2/3 and limitations, not entire text/everycalculation; practice not validated.

When can the note end?

When observation, conjecture and an unknown condition are distinguished for the chosen question; a whole personality profile is unnecessary.

Key distinctions

Three scales have working meanings for a personal note, not a personality test. (United Wisdom editorial reasoning)

Epictetus§4 proposes considering an undertaking through a bathing scene. (Epictetus/Carter§4)

The paper read distinguishes state variation and stable distribution characteristics in the data considered. (Fleeson2001,selectedprimary)

The selected chapter considers different acts and difficulties of a single judgment. (Montaigne/Cotton/HazlittII.1)

Generalisation, observation, a person's account and causal conjecture are not interchangeable evidence. (United Wisdom editorial reasoning)

A new episode and whole-personality change have different scales. (United Wisdom editorial reasoning)

Explaining a state establishes neither fulfilment of a promise nor another's consent. (United Wisdom editorial reasoning)

Limits of interpretation

  • Working meanings for personalwriting, not newscale/diagnosis; everydaystate distinguished from researchoperation.
  • Montaigne: entireselectedII.1, not wholeEssays/verifiedanecdotes; questionable historicalexamples not presentfacts/norms.
  • Epictetus: selected§4/headerreadearlierthisbatch, philosophy not experiment/controlothers.
  • Fleeson: completeoriginalabstract/selectedpartswithmethods2/3/limitations, not entirepaper/alltables/citedstudies; selfreports/students/wording/responselimits.
  • Factualcondition distinct from provedcause, observation distinct from account/conjecture about feelings.
  • Repeatedaccount not newcases; newepisode not wholepersonalitychange, conditions not automaticcommitmentrepair.
  • Practice voluntaryeditorial, noeffect/therapy/guarantees; privacy/consent/suitablestop; rightsUNKNOWN, nofullimport.
