An older person's advice and one's own responsibility

Consider what the adviser observed, what they concluded and what action they propose. Age does not replace specific checking. Advice or part of it can be accepted while retaining one’s decision; agreed delegation and a shared resource have separate conditions. Neither advice nor its rejection guarantees success.

Questions explored

Does requesting advice hand over the decision?

Not automatically. Clarify whether information, appraisal, help or an agreed task transfer is wanted. Each participation has a subject.

Does accepting advice mean lacking autonomy?

No. Reasons can be examined and the same path chosen; pressure and actual conditions of agreement need separate attention.

Does all responsibility lie with the recipient?

No. The adviser answers for their own information and promised participation; particular actions and conditions are considered without transferring all responsibility wholesale.

Key distinctions

Seniority recalls possible experience without confirming every recommendation’s applicability. (Authorial distinction)

Aristotle connects practical wisdom with particular circumstances; his age judgment is no contemporary measurement. (Aristotle VI.8)

In Mrs. Mason’s instruction, the pupils’ independent practice of rules coexists with her conditional regard as historical fictional authority. (Wollstonecraft XXV)

The Analects distinguishes assessment of a person from the weight of words within particular ethics without requiring unsafe listening. (Analects XV.22)

Limits of interpretation

  • No diagnosis, hidden motives, empirical age/competence efficacy, project success guarantee, financial/legal/craft safety protocol, forced disclosure or unsafe contact.
  • Didactic fiction concerning minors, ancient practical wisdom and Confucian ethics remain distinct from adult authorial practice; historical medical metaphors/diet examples not instructions.
  • Primary quotation literals exist only in reader roles; no duplication in services, GEO or cards.
