Lack of intention is not lack of causes. Ignorance confirms no hidden account; probability needs conditions; physical certification explains neither everyday luck nor freedom. Personal significance retains a separate status.
Questions explored
Does an unpredicted result mean that it has no cause?
Not by itself. Specify the observer, information and forecasting method. These establish neither universal causelessness nor omniscience.
Are two named outcomes equally probable?
Not automatically. A model and grounds for equal possibility are needed; two expressions provide neither.
Can a coincidence remain meaningful without a demonstrated hidden mechanism?
Yes. A personal relationship to an event differs from a general explanation and does not oblige someone else to share the interpretation.
Key distinctions
Aristotle Physics II.5 considers a chance result through its incidental relationship to purpose. (II.5, Hardie/Gaye; historical teleology, not a complete contemporary classification of causes.)
Hume VI 46–47 examines unknown causes and expectation across possible or previous cases. (His opening noChance claim remains a historical premise, not a contemporary quantum result.)
Laplace’s ideal analysis differs from human knowledge; probability depends on information and case conditions. (II/III, Truscott–Emory 1902; a thought construction is not a completed forecast.)
The used 2018 random-bit experiment has physical and informational conditions. (Bierhorst et al. primary main text/Methods; demonstration settings and trust retained. No assumption-free security or metaphysical freedom inferred.)
Personal significance, a causal account and numerical probability differ in this article’s library example. (Hypothetical example and proposed reading method, not an efficacy study.)
Limits of interpretation
- A bounded map of meanings of chance, historical texts and a narrow physical example. Not a complete probability textbook, a solution to free will or a quantum explanation of everyday luck. Missing information confirms no account; two outcomes establish no equal probabilities. Physical/information conditions remain. Personal significance is not a general causal law; no practice efficacy study.
