Distinguish physical availability, an accepted rule, a record and an action. Naming an object or role does not replace grounds for its operation.
Questions explored
Does a durable object automatically become money?
No in our invented example: participants, accepted actions and exchange conditions are specified; actual currency is not assessed.
Does having a key establish a commission?
Capacity to open a door and recognised grounds for acting differ in the authorial story.
Do consequences disappear when a rule changes?
Not automatically in the example: an earlier book transfer and future conditions are considered separately.
Key distinctions
The article distinguishes material object, recognised relationship, record and performed action. (Article authors; invented example.)
Locke V.46–50 considers preservation alongside money and agreed use. (Locke. Second Treatise of Government, V, §§46–50; Project Gutenberg English text. Bounded argument on preservation, money and agreed use consulted.)
In the selected Hobbes XVI passage, representation under a commission has a limit. (Hobbes. Leviathan, XVI, bounded opening passage on person, representation and commission, including its limit. Gutenberg English; not the complete treatise or current law.)
Searle’s publisher extract raises economic subject matter’s dependence on human beliefs and attitudes. (Searle. What is an institution? Journal of Institutional Economics, 1(1),2005,pp1–22,DOI10.1017/S1744137405000020. Only complete publisher extract consulted in search display; full paper not obtained.)
Limits of interpretation
- Tokens, room, keeper and all events are invented. Locke and Hobbes were consulted within identified English bounds; Searle only in the publisher extract, with full paper unavailable. Actual money, contracts, offices and national borders are not investigated. Historical colonial judgments and unconditional justification of authority are not adopted. Contemporary exercise and ethical conditions are authorial.
