Identify what failed, which conditions were involved, and what supports a correction. One account’s failure proves no alternative; an open cause does not prevent correcting established error.
Questions explored
Can any theory now be protected?
No. Corrections need their own grounds; established error is corrected, while application differs from continued inquiry.
Does defeating one account prove the other?
Not by itself. Examine whether the alternatives exhaust the question and obtain separate grounds for the proposed explanation.
Must complete explanation precede correcting a fact?
No. An established specific error can be corrected while its cause remains open.
Key distinctions
Duhem considers an ensemble of physical-testing premises rather than one isolated hypothesis. (II.VI.II; everyday application is a limited analogy.)
Poincaré warns against excessive multiplication and distinguishes kinds of hypotheses. (Science and Hypothesis IX; historical mathematical physics.)
One explanation’s failure does not establish another without separate grounds. (Original ordinary logical illustration compared with II.VI.III.)
A claim’s error, work’s value, and human dignity are considered separately. (Original conversational exercise and boundaries, no clinical method.)
Limits of interpretation
- Limited philosophical application of historical texts, not theory immunity. Preserve error, cause, conditions, scope and decisions as distinct. Hypothetical examples; no laboratory, clinical, legal or technical instructions. Good sense replaces neither relevant information nor voluntary participation and action costs.
