One word, different concepts: a trap in comparative reading

Compare a word's work within an assertion: object, contrast, boundaries, grounds, and permitted conclusion. A shared translated name establishes neither a common doctrine nor contradiction. Selected fragments support bounded comparison, not judgment on complete traditions.

Questions explored

Does one shared word prove a common doctrine?

No. Compare the object, boundaries, contrast, and conclusions of particular assertions.

Is peace identical in Augustine and Kant?

No identical definition is established here. Selected Augustine lists ordered relations with a theological aim; selected Kant distinguishes peace from truce by a condition concerning future hostility.

Can texts be compared without the original language?

A bounded question can be prepared by retaining sentences and editions. Mark the unchecked original; a complete translation verdict does not automatically follow.

Key distinctions

A name alone does not perform an assertion's work. (Aristotle, On Interpretation, parts 1–2; comparative application authorial, not an experimental model.)

Dictionary correspondence may not retain identical boundaries of a complex idea. (Locke, III.V.8; historical philosophical argument, not a modern dictionary accuracy statistic.)

Selected Augustine and Kant passages relate peace to different objects and grounds. (Authorial comparison of City of God, XIX.13, and Perpetual Peace, preliminary article 1; not complete doctrines or current law.)

Understanding a historical assertion need not mean approving all its grounds. (Authorial distinction between transmission, evaluation, and adaptation; no established exercise effects.)

Conceptual difference alone establishes neither contradiction nor complete theoretical compatibility. (Authorial scope boundary for comparative reading of selected passages.)

Limits of interpretation

  • Bounded philosophical-editorial comparison of selected passages. No complete tradition survey,currentlaw/conflict assessment, culturalhierarchy,or empiricallanguage theory. Originallanguages uncollated; incompletereading scopes retained. Examples invented; practice authorial/voluntary with no establishedeffects. Understanding historicalhierarchy grants no currentapproval.
