Another person’s testimony: grounds for trusting what others know

Examine a particular report: how it is known, what the person could understand, and which action it supports. A gap is not a judgment of personal worth.

Questions explored

Does an inaccurate report establish deception?

No. A sincere mistake is possible; deliberate deception needs its own support. This is the article’s logical distinction.

What can I clarify with a witness?

Access, area of understanding, and transmission route, within an appropriate question and personal boundaries. This is the authors’ proposal.

Must trust be unconditional?

The article proposes trust in a particular report relative to its support; the philosophical positions are not merged into one doctrine.

Key distinctions

Sincerity and the accuracy of a report are distinguishable. (Article authors: distinction and invented example.)

Repetitions sharing one origin are not independent testimony in the article’s invented example. (Article authors: distinction and invented example.)

Hume considers grounds of assurance through experience and the circumstances of testimony. (Hume. Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, X.3–8, within Of Miracles; Hume Texts Online English text.)

Reid’s account of original dispositions has philosophical and theological grounds. (Thomas Reid. Inquiry into the Human Mind, VI.XXIV; electronic transcription identified with Works1813, not collated against printed pages.)

Proverbs14:15 is considered as religious advice, not a scientific verification procedure. (Proverbs14:15 with neighbouring verses, King James Version: religious wisdom advice.)

Limits of interpretation

  • Reading is limited to the stated Hume/Reid passages and Proverbs14 in KJV. Arguments are philosophical and advice religious; the questions’ experimental efficacy is not established. The meeting is hypothetical. Do not infer a person’s overall worth from one report.
