Archives and society’s memory: who preserves testimony

Ask who created and retained the material, its purpose and what it supports. Distinguish object, description, interpretation and uncertainty; preservation differs from publication.

Questions explored

Does a programme establish that a piece was performed?

It can support the announced intention; actual performance needs suitable grounds. This is the article’s example.

Does inaccessibility establish that a document is absent?

No. Distinguish existence, description, access conditions and search coverage. A gap alone does not determine its cause.

How can a check end?

With a bounded conclusion, corrected caption or open question with intelligible grounds. Complete recovery is not promised.

Key distinctions

An event, surviving trace and present account are distinguishable. (Article authors: distinction in an invented example.)

Thucydides describes difficulty transmitting speeches verbatim and differing testimony in his historical work. (Thucydides. History of the Peloponnesian War, Book I, selected discussion of testimony and speeches; Richard Crawley translation, Gutenberg 7142. Only the selected passage was read.)

UNESCO1.2 supplies normative guidance for clearly defined, non-discriminatory selection criteria. (UNESCO. Documentary heritage preservation/access Recommendation, 17 November 2015, definitions and sections 1–3; normative document, not an audit of an archive.)

An item’s absence from an accessible selection does not determine a single explanation. (Article authors: distinction in an invented example.)

The Library of Congress sheet distinguishes observation, reflection, questions and further investigation. (Library of Congress. Primary Source Analysis Tool: one-page methodological sheet. Text was read; no measured efficacy claim.)

Limits of interpretation

  • Music club and exhibition are invented. Original procedure is no archival appraisal, restoration, legal advice or guaranteed recovery. Missing records alone prove neither absent events nor deliberate silence. UNESCO recommendation is normative; implementation was not checked. Thucydides describes method without independently proving whole-work accuracy.
