Reading a study while noticing its limits

Reading limits need not erase a result. Distinguish recruited from analyzed participants, measurement from explanation, statistical significance from importance, and a task result from transfer. A useful conclusion keeps essential conditions inside its wording.

Questions explored

Does a limitation make a result useless?

Not necessarily. It identifies the question its grounds reach; extension requires additional justification.

Does a small p-value give the probability of truth?

No. The ASA release connects it to a statistical model, separating truth probability, magnitude, and importance.

Have I checked all methods after reading only an abstract?

No. Confidence and descriptions of reading should fit the parts actually examined.

Key distinctions

Kok’s 2012 study analyzed eighteen of twenty recruited participants. (Kok/Jehee/de Lange methods; exclusions named, no universal sample.)

Reduced amplitude and improved pattern classification concern different measures. (Kok results distinguished from authors interpretation.)

A p-value is not a hypothesis truth probability; significance differs from magnitude and importance. (ASA official2016release principles2/5; no fulljournalreading claim.)

Bacon addresses contrary cases, while Hume addresses experience leading to expectation. (BaconI.XLVI/HumeV selected; not modern behavioral or neural experiments.)

The practice records understanding, rather than independently accepting a study or providing established therapy. (United Wisdom voluntaryneutralexercise.)

Limits of interpretation

  • Preserve group, task, and measure conditions. Do not turn eighteen participants into a universal sample, interpretation into an independent measurement, a p-value into a truth probability, or a bounded result into a consequential recommendation. Philosophical comparisons are editorial; practice has no established efficacy claim.
