Autism: hearing the person and changing the conditions around them
material_id: UW:GROW-043:en
For caring adults and young adults aged 18+. Question: how can a particular person be heard and participate?
The article separates speech, understanding and responding; outward quietness and wellbeing; predictability and a promise of sameness. Autism does not provide a single needs profile. A child should not be made responsible for changing all adults.
Possible action: identify one need, use a familiar accessible channel, reduce one barrier and check whether a message was heard. Where no reliable means exists, request individual communication assessment. Buying a device is not the necessary starting point. Play, interest, privacy and accessible refusal remain part of support.
New marked discomfort or unsafe behaviour needs separate assessment; immediate danger calls for local urgent help. No home diagnosis, clinical regimen or legal decision is offered. Sources: NHS autism/support, professional AAC information, Dewey I.2/II.1 and CRC 12/16. Local services are not guaranteed. Publication and production acceptance NOT_RUN.
