Sensory overload: changing conditions without demanding endurance at any cost
material_id: UW:GROW-045:en
For caring adults and young adults aged 18+. Question: which condition obstructs participation, and what can safely change?
A sensory description diagnoses neither autism nor hyperacusis. Accounts, observations and hypotheses differ. New pain needs a separate medical question. Adjustments have aims, costs and limits; a child's exit must be genuine and safe.
Possible action: one participation aim, one agreed change, a familiar pause request, an adult responsibility and review of effort and interest. With limited resources, begin with unnecessary background demand and a conversation with the provider. Coercive home exposure is not offered.
No therapy, equipment or earplug regimen is prescribed. Hyperacusis advice cannot cover every sensory situation. Immediate danger calls for local urgent assistance.
