Shame, Comparison, and the Fear of Disappointing Loved Ones
Original: ARTICLE_EN.md, r01. Local author-prepared GEO, October 23, 2026. Server acceptance has not run.
Audience and decision
Parents, other caring adults, and young adults aged eighteen and over distinguishing a correctable mistake, a chosen comparison, humiliating treatment, and fear of losing affection. No separate independent child-facing master is introduced.
Content
An account of an action differs from a verdict on the whole self. A certificate, speed, or another person's skill does not measure human worth. A parent's hope does not make a child responsible for their dream, reputation, or emotional state. Specific feedback preserves room for questions and correction. Real harm requires separate repair; dignity does not mean approving every action. Private mistakes and public humiliation have different conditions.
Accessible step
Name one episode and criterion without an overall rank; ask what it meant to the child. An adult changes one action: stops a sibling comparison, acknowledges a harsh remark, ends public discussion, or identifies a skill. Ask about one criterion, try a method on a rough sketch, keep work private, or return later. With limited resources, a brief acknowledgement and one actual action can begin. Play and rest do not become duties to improve self-esteem.
Limits
No home test, diagnosis, or guaranteed relief. Persistent distress, substantial disruption of ordinary life, or insufficient support warrants appropriate assessment. Unsafe behaviour or talk of harm to oneself or others calls for immediate help; immediate danger calls for local emergency assistance. Do not wait for an exercise or flawless narrative. Children do not end violence or organise all support alone. Age, consent, confidentiality, and access require local clarification rather than inference from language.
Basis
CDC, AAP, and NIMH provide education, not individual diagnosis. Aristotle IV.9 and Confucius XV, Legge's label XXX are distinct ethical texts; historical approval of shame and neglect of rest are not parenting prescriptions.
