Unplanned pregnancy: supporting decisions and access to care

Guide contents

Audience and question

Young adults eighteen or over, parents, and caring adults: how can information and help remain available without the most confident helper acquiring the decision? Shared reading with a teenager allows a fictional scene without disclosure.

Distinctions

Unplanned establishes no preferred outcome. Present condition differs from a final decision. Continuing pregnancy/abortion and later parenting have different subjects. Information, voluntary trained counselling, local law, and actual access are separate. Resources buy neither a decision, information, nor intimacy.

Available step

Take one present question to appropriate competence. Check conditions, cost, language, data, and a companion's scope. Limited resources can mean one organisational task without a course, diary, or intimate dossier. Request, booking, and care received differ. An international recommendation confirms neither current local law nor availability.

Urgency and protection

Possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding calls for urgent clinical assessment. Sudden or sharp abdominal pain, severe dizziness, feeling faint, or collapse needs emergency help; await neither a positive test nor every sign. This is no diagnosis or safety guarantee where signs are absent. Threats call for appropriate safe assistance rather than dangerous confrontation. Minors need participation and age-specific protection together; children do not repair unsafe families. No absolute-secrecy promise is made.

Evidence

NHS2026, HSE2025, WHO2025, WHO counselling, and limited ethical references to Seneca/Wollstonecraft. Scopes, dates, and limits appear in the master. No regimen, remote eligibility, universal legal deadline, or emotional outcome promised.
