Question and answer

How does the clinical question of bipolar disorder differ from everyday “mood swings”? Assessment considers change from the person's usual state, sequence, sleep, energy, decisions, and consequences together. One sleepless night, high productivity, or disagreement with relatives does not establish a diagnosis. This article prepares a description and conversation rather than diagnosing the reader.

Distinctions retained from the master

  • Mania and hypomania are not names for inspiration. Irritability and agitation do not rule out an elevated episode; pleasantness does not determine a diagnosis.
  • Observation, inner experience, and interpretation differ. A relative's account has an author and limits; it does not replace the person's voice.
  • A history matters beyond a snapshot. Possible physical causes, substances, and treatment changes belong in medical assessment; the article orders no tests or independent discontinuation.
  • An overlapping experience of agitation and despair should be communicated without a home diagnosis of mixed features. A combination alone is insufficient, and limitations of evidence remain explicit.
  • Symptom management, prevention of recurrence, and recovery of a chosen life are related but different aims. Employment and productivity do not measure dignity.
  • Agreed preferences and support should preserve involvement and review. A diagnosis does not automatically establish legal inability to decide; a document's legal effect depends on jurisdiction and form.

Feasible application and limits

A person may describe one period: usual state / changes / consequences / question. With little energy, one sentence may suffice: “My sleep, energy, and decisions have changed noticeably; I need help understanding this.” A relative can identify an observation and offer bounded assistance. Money, a telephone, family support, and exact dates are not assumed; an actually accessible point of care must be clarified rather than inferred from an online list.

An immediate threat to life, marked confusion, or inability to meet basic needs safely calls for available local urgent medical help before reading. Neither a required episode duration nor a diary is a prerequisite. There are no contact numbers, medication schedules, covert surveillance, or demands to accept a diagnosis. Sources and epistemic status

NIMH, Bipolar Disorder, 2025 is an official overview; VA/DoD Provider Summary, 2023, Sidebars 1–4 and Module C note supplies professional guidance; the VA/DoD family guide addresses recovery and support. Reading entire books or underlying studies is not claimed.

Aristotle I/III.1, Epictetus I, Kant II, Analects XV.xxiii in Legge, and Laozi 63–64 have philosophical roles. They neither explain illness causally nor establish treatment effects. Exact editions, passages, and limits are recorded in ARTICLE_EN.md and SOURCES.json.
