Purpose and basis

Independent adult entrance to eating disorders outside addiction framing. New linked adaptation of DEP-09-N05 RU revision 1: complete original and bibliography read and preserved. GEO remains subordinate to this master without expanding diagnosis or treatment.

NIMH 2024 describes serious illnesses involving eating behaviour and related thoughts/feelings, affecting different ages, sexes and weights. Appearance establishes no condition; one large dinner is no diagnosis. Recurrence, control, restriction, fear, daily effects and physical condition matter, with professional assessment of their combination. Anorexia, bulimia, BED and ARFID are briefly distinguished without self-check thresholds.

An addiction metaphor may express lost freedom but cannot govern treatment. Food is necessary; substance abstinence cannot automatically transfer. NHS BED treatment notes difficulty associated with dieting during care, not a menu for every condition. No calories, target weights, compensation techniques or home course. Physical assessment connects with psychological care/nutritional support. Clinical measurement is no moral grade; procedural fear can be discussed without hiding relevant facts or independently changing prescriptions.

Complex causes cannot be inferred from one family/trauma/character story. Food scarcity through poverty is not automatically psychiatric illness; medical and social need can coexist. Hypothetical Maxim and Irina show different difficulties without establishing diagnosis. Access to assessment need not be earned by deterioration or the most severe body.

Application and conditions

Without an acute condition, name one fact and consequence, report physical deterioration separately and request eating/physical assessment. Notes, numbers, photographs and complete causal histories are unnecessary prerequisites. Limited-resource circumstances include cost, transport, language, contact and accompaniment; referral differs from care received. Acute deterioration, unresponsiveness after loss of consciousness, sudden confusion or inability to maintain safety calls for available immediate help. Examples are not exhaustive and absence does not exclude risk. Language determines no country or number.

A helper's role is agreed, without general access to food/weight/messages. Children do not monitor adults; helpers do not replace a team. Improvement includes medical condition, experience and daily participation. Appearance/attendance cannot certify completed care. Observation is agreed rather than prescribing home weighing or portion records.

Traditions and sources

Epictetus §1 limits promises of control without authorising bodily neglect. Legge XV.XXX questions fruitless thinking without food/sleep rather than prescribing fasting. Dhammapada 141 on external ascetic forms does not judge patients impure. Aristotle VIII.1–3 on another's good distinguishes care from calming a helper. Differences remain; traditions produce no clinical conclusions.
