Entrance and distinctions
An adult with appearance preoccupation gains descriptions of thoughts, checking, comparison, avoidance and daily effects for professional BDD/alternative assessment. Hypothetical Olga is not diagnosed; beauty/actual defects are not judged from images. Grooming or disliking one photo is no diagnosis; BDD is not vanity. Mirrors/avoidance are illustrations, not a home checklist. Support recognises experience without certifying horror or promising a compliment's effect.
Physical complaints need separate consideration and prove/disprove no BDD. Cosmetic procedures and care for preoccupation have different aims; changing a feature proves no resolution. No procedure is prescribed or prohibited and no cosmetic cure promised. Report other difficulties/treatment. No home ERP, sudden mirror ban, photo diary, attractiveness ranking, skin damage or prescription changes.
CBT is possible professional care. The read supported BDD-NET trial in 94 adults has selection limits including exclusion of acute suicide risk; any online course is not equivalent. The full paper/appendices are not claimed read. Immediate danger/inability to maintain safety requires available immediate assistance. Language determines no country/number.
Practice and conditions
Without acute danger, one known daily effect, assessment request, physical complaints/treatment and access barrier can start. No body love, photo archive, beauty proof or new counting required. Clarify plan, goal, safe contact and review. Limited resources permit a spoken beginning/note; cost, language, privacy and absent phones/relatives matter. Referral is not assessment received. Helpers have one agreed role; children are not reassurance providers/monitors. Participation matters without one outing certifying completed care.
Traditions and sources
Epictetus §1 promises neither bodily/reputational command nor anxiety removal by judgement. Augustine X.8 distinguishes things/inner images within memory theology, without explaining BDD/digital photography or cancelling distress. Aristotle VIII.2 on a friend's good widens support beyond attractiveness. Different aims do not merge into a clinical method.
