Questions & Answers
I am more than my diagnosis: identity and an ordinary life

Answer
Medical description, self-definition and social role connect without exhausting one another. A diagnosis may name difficulties and help discuss support without explaining every choice. Someone may value it within identity, use it for a particular task or leave their attitude unresolved. Pride, acceptance, disclosure and rejection of the term are not compulsory.
Argument
I–III consider useful language without turning it into a biography. More than a diagnosis does not deny necessary assistance; necessary assistance does not postpone every other subject until complete improvement. NIH guidance recognises different language preferences. It is US institutional writing guidance rather than a clinical protocol, universal community preference or law of identity. Situations can have different purposes and information needs; actual formal requirements require separate clarification.
IV–VI distinguish recognition, role and dignity. James describes a social self without awarding respect through others' responses. Invitations and direct questions can actually disappear; inner confidence alone does not repair that loss. Epictetus 17 employs a role assigned in a drama rather than authorising relatives to determine a whole life or demanding endurance of barriers. Circumstances also affect the expression of character.
Kant distinguishes replaceable value from dignity through rational nature and autonomy. Philosophy supplies no clinical-capacity, memory, speech or usefulness test. CRPD Article 12 links equal legal recognition with support and safeguards without establishing actual powers or local procedures. Respect approves no harm and demands no unsafe closeness; responsibility concerns a particular action.
VII–XII address ordinary roles, privacy, assistance without an acceptance examination, precise language and resources. Income, company and an activity can be lost differently. A new public mission is no prescribed replacement. Confucius XIII.3 concerns names within government rather than diagnosis. Correct terminology does not itself restore access or participation: words and conduct need separate evidence. These sources form neither one scientific model nor evidence of an exercise's efficacy.
Manageable application
Choose, if wanted, one situation and distinguish known support information, personal wishes and others' added judgments. One safe, limited request may concern an opinion being heard, invitations retained, avoiding medical introductions or help understanding a document. Speech, familiar communication, assistance making the request, no writing and declining reflection are all possible.
Money, relatives, fluent speech and available services are not assumed. A child is no permanent intermediary; naming a contact does not establish an accepted task. Request, response and support delivered differ. A partial result or remaining gap can be named without a verdict on oneself.
The article selects no diagnosis, changes no treatment, prescribes neither always disclosing nor concealing and cannot retrieve information already shared. Unsafe contact requires no personal confrontation. Significant deterioration and immediate danger need appropriate professional or urgent assistance rather than a completed life story.
