Equal rules and unequal starting conditions

Specify the assessed quality and distinguish content, means, access timing and presentation. Assistance can change means while preserving a criterion, but does not guarantee admission or identical outcomes. Known differences neither rank overall abilities nor require complete biographies.

Questions explored

Does assistance cancel shared standards?

Not necessarily: determine whether means or the assessment subject changes. Explaining a form differs from completing it for a participant.

Is a complete biography needed for clarification?

A specific format difficulty may need relevant information only. Required scope and reason should be stated; declining excessive disclosure does not establish deception.

Does assistance guarantee participation?

No: access differs from answer quality. Refusal establishes no permanent inability; success does not establish complete equality of starting conditions.

Key distinctions

An identical final date does not establish equal time to understand a condition. (Marina's and Yuri's imagined cards.)

Mill links educational conditions to access to educational means within his historical franchise argument. (Chapter VIII, web31; historical restrictions not adopted as contemporary norms.)

An alternative format can preserve or change an assessment's subject; its purpose needs specifying. (Card and oral description in the imagined workshop.)

Provided access, received answers and read content are different outcomes. (Bounded outcome of assistance to Yuri.)

Limits of interpretation

  • Programme and people are imagined.
  • Not a country's law, diagnosis of capabilities or scientific equality test.
  • Assistance does not guarantee identical outcomes.
  • Historical franchise restrictions are not adopted.
  • Resources do not define personal moral qualities.
  • Direct contact is not prescribed under threats.
