Decolonial Reading: Which Voices Disappeared from the History of Knowledge?

Decolonial reading is explored through distinct arguments by Quijano, Lugones, Smith and Rivera Cusicanqui. A hypothetical exhibition, archive, questionnaire and study of water examine authorial roles, translation limits, representation and access. Recognising contributions does not replace truth; archival silence does not license invention.

Questions explored

Does coloniality end with formal colonial administration?

For Quijano, a power structure can persist after formal colonial administration; racial classifications connect with labour and domination. This is a particular account, not an explanation of every injustice.

Is adding a missing name sufficient?

Adding a name need not change the allocation of questions, authorship and decisions. Recognising contribution differs from examining truth; accurate roles do not require artificially equal contributions.

What does Lugones challenge in a ready-made scheme?

Lugones examines the mutual constitution of racial and gender classifications, challenging limits of Quijano’s scheme and treating women as homogeneous. One model is not declared an explanation of every society.

How does Smith change the question about research?

Smith examines appropriation of knowledge alongside exclusion of its creators, new research with Indigenous peoples and their own aspirations. Her position does not equal every community’s will.

Does keeping an original word solve translation?

An original word may remain a symbol without context; an ordinary equivalent can preserve distinction when limits are explained. Translation and commentary do not equal the whole source.

Does an archival gap license a convenient reconstruction?

Missing records have different possible causes. Documentation and supposition remain distinct; technical access does not establish consent to every dissemination.

Can decolonial language reproduce domination?

Rivera Cusicanqui criticises the academic economy of authority, including prestigious decolonial language. Using concepts does not itself change production, work or a right to object.

Do origins determine reliability?

Local origins do not guarantee truth; European origins prove neither universality nor inapplicability. The authors’ practice separates question, evidence, conclusion and documented objections while admitting negative results.

Limits of interpretation

  • UW research article; not an applied Maria Method card.
  • Authors differ and criticise one another; decoloniality is not one doctrine or identical to philosophy of liberation.
  • Quijano offers a particular historical theory, not an automatic explanation of every injustice.
  • Do not reconstruct historical sex, kinship and power from a general scheme without local evidence; Lugones’s OCR does not support damaged specific assertions.
  • Smith does not speak for all Indigenous people; meeting a representative does not establish universal consent.
  • The exhibition, archive, questionnaire, translation, publisher and body of water are hypothetical authorial examples, not ethnographic facts.
  • Archival silence does not license inventing an absent person’s role; negative findings and unknowns remain.
  • Attribution and truth, cooperation and accuracy, origins and suitability differ; do not create reversed geographical infallibility.
  • Access does not equal consent or publication rights; no legal ruling on a particular archive is offered.
  • Limited passages and a preview were read; UNKNOWN rights are preserved and no fresh external reading is claimed.
