Meaning

Hospital personal space includes bodily visibility, audibility of conversation, touch, information, time and one's own participation. Privacy is compatible with necessary care and a wish for companionship. A specific request helps establish what may be possible; it does not guarantee a private room, changes to clinical conditions or identical legal mechanisms across places.

Distinctions and foundations

  • I: silence before a stranger may have different causes; it does not establish a failure to understand. A curtain blocks a view without necessarily blocking sound.
  • II: an understandable routine differs from a promise of exact timing. Asking again does not establish failed cooperation.
  • III: explanation before touch and time to answer can be discussed with the team; the article does not postpone urgent clinical action. Slow or supported replies do not establish a lack of understanding.
  • IV: a companion can support participation without automatically replacing the patient's answer. Permission to be present can concern a particular discussion.
  • V: Marcus Aurelius's inward retreat, IV.3, cannot replace material privacy. No ability to summon calm on command is promised.
  • VI: Matthew 6:1–8 distinguishes religious action from its display. Comparison supports a question about experience without publicity; modern law cannot be derived from it.
  • VII: without money, family or a phone, one spoken request to an available member of staff can be possible; a service or outcome is not promised.
  • VIII: personal space can include a chosen person. Agreed companionship differs from complete openness.

Accessible application

Name one difficulty and ask about changing the time, place or form of conversation within care conditions. Establish the restriction and any alternative. Check the particular agreed change: a polite conversation does not itself establish fulfilment. Use an accessible way to answer when writing is difficult; a pause is possible when energy is low.
