Authorship and data: taking part in research does not authorise everything

This article considers a student or researcher who notices a discrepancy in a contribution statement or byline. A fictional case separates contribution, responsibility for text, funding and data-use permission. Recognition does not authorise control over the whole project, and rank does not establish everyone's work in advance.

Epigraph

“…does not claim them as its own…”

Laozi, The Tao Teh King, chapter 10.3, James Legge translation. Brief fragment: the context concerns the Dao producing and nourishing without possession or boasting. The text read. This philosophical image does not waive a researcher's lawful rights or legitimate credit.

What this article is about

Several questions easily merge in a research group. Who proposed the idea, gathered material, performed analysis and wrote the text? Who may use the data? Who answers for the conclusion, and whose name appears on publication? Educational status, position and funding affect discussion without answering every question. Even honest collaboration can encounter unclear roles; a dispute alone establishes no appropriation of another person's work.

Maksim, a postgraduate researcher in an invented group, prepared analysis and part of a manuscript. Before submission, he notices the contribution statement and byline differ from his expectations. Everyone and all circumstances are fictional. This article considers contribution, attribution, responsibility, data and academic resource dependence without adjudicating an actual dispute. Scientific disagreement differs from administrative action; an author's signature differs from permission to take data away. Safe action, corrected publication, a place, funding and earnings are not guaranteed. The question is how to specify the matter and available grounds without treating rank as unlimited authority or hurt feelings as a verdict.

I. A position does not reveal a work's origins

In the fictional project, a supervisor framed the initial task, Maksim proposed a different analysis, a colleague prepared the dataset and another checked calculations. No single true creator must be selected in advance. A shared result can contain several substantial contributions. Yet calling everyone a team does not explain who performed a particular part. Understanding the discrepancy requires a definite subject: which manuscript version, conclusion or role description? A general judgment of participants' character does not establish the origin of that particular work.

The most visible part need not encompass the whole contribution. Writing comes late but may rely on an earlier method. A large collection of material does not automatically identify the originator of a question. Equally, an early general idea establishes no authorship of every later decision. There is no universal money or time counter here. Establish actions and their relation to the result while distinguishing labour volume, intellectual substance and the recognition rules that actually concern this output. A contribution can matter without being identical to another participant's work.

Rank supplies no substitute for that description. A supervisor may contribute substantially while a student performs a limited technical task; the reverse is possible. Lower status makes no contribution automatically primary, and higher status makes none automatically fictitious. Roles become misleading when they determine the story regardless of work: everything important is assigned to the senior person, or every senior intervention is declared exploitation. The starting point is a particular research contribution rather than mandatory victory for a category of participant. Neither gratitude nor suspicion establishes its contents.

Maksim can compare what he actually prepared, what others changed and the current contribution statement, within legitimate access. That is neither proof of appropriation nor permission to copy restricted materials. A working-version misunderstanding or a fundamental disagreement may emerge. Both need accurate naming. A dispute over first position should not be described as complete omission of a name. Where a name is absent, invoking a general spirit of cooperation does not itself answer the specific question. The discrepancy matters at its actual scale, without expanding it into every possible wrong.

II. An author name involves credit and responsibility

The ICMJE material read connects authorship with credit and responsibility. It is medical-journal guidance, not universal research law. ICMJE. The limited question here concerns both recognition and the work a person endorses. In an actual project, establish the relevant journal, discipline and institutional requirements rather than assigning another field's standard to everyone. A title cannot determine every applicable condition, and a brief article cannot replace reading the rules governing the particular manuscript. The appropriate framework is itself something to establish.

ICMJE conditions apply together, without shutting eligible contributors out of manuscript preparation and approval. Read the full criteria at the source. In our case, saying someone did not approve the final version raises a separate factual question: was it available for proper consideration? This concerns opportunity, not an automatic byline award. Maksim may not have received it, may not have replied or may have raised a reasoned objection. Different circumstances should not be compressed into one status mark. Access alone also does not establish an individual's authorship entitlement.

A listed name differs from meaningful participation in the final text. Maksim may want credit while disagreeing with a conclusion. Adding his name does not settle that difference. What text is he endorsing, and how can an unresolved issue be addressed under actual requirements? The article recommends neither signing anything to retain a place nor abandoning authorship over every disagreement. Substance, possible correction and responsibility need consideration rather than exchanging a signature for quiet. Recognition should not hide a remaining question about what is actually being asserted in the shared work.

Conversely, someone may seek recognition without willingness to understand the work associated with the role. Page counts or respect for past achievement cannot settle that. A contribution may deserve accurate acknowledgment without establishing every kind of author status. Responsibility also need not mean personally repeating each co-author's experiment; its scope depends on the applicable framework. Preserve both questions: what was done, and what is now endorsed? Recognition should not promise nonexistent powers, while a signature should not become decoration. These distinctions concern the actual role rather than a person's overall moral worth.

III. A contribution description does not award byline position

CRediT offers language for different contributions, including analysis, data work, software, funding, supervision and writing. This identifies distinct actions without reducing a result to one general label. Its implementation guidance expressly separates contribution description from determining authorship. CRediT explanation. An assigned label automatically establishes neither a signature nor first position nor data ownership. Each needs a separate basis. A role statement can clarify work while leaving another disagreement open; that limitation does not make the description useless or authorise using it to settle questions it was never meant to decide.

Maksim and a colleague might both analyse, while another person develops a method and writes. Several roles are not several votes in allocating a position. Matching labels do not establish equal work either. Converting everything into percentages may appear precise while concealing unlike subjects. First identify descriptions the participants confirm and their actual differences. This guarantees no agreement, but avoids arguing about name order with words that establish only that an action occurred. A stated role needs connection to actual work, rather than merely occupying a box in a form.

Early discussion can be a working agreement to revisit as a project develops. Further analysis, ended participation or substantial revision may change the result. An initial plan does not automatically describe final contributions. Revision should nevertheless not become a concealed retrospective change discovered after submission. This is an author's organisational distinction, not a validated conflict-prevention technique. Actual rules, roles and discussion opportunities still matter, particularly for a dependent participant. A recommendation to discuss openly does not establish that the discussion is available or that a question will have no consequences.

Separate name order from compiling a role table. Maksim gains no unilateral authority to change the list; a collective outcome is not automatically fair either. Discussion, a senior person's announcement and an agreement actually reached by all differ. Absent agreement should not be presented as achieved. A table's existence proves neither its reading nor confirmation. It is useful within what it records, rather than replacing the disputed decision. An ordering criterion and authority to resolve disagreement need their own basis; neither follows merely from a completed form or the number of labels assigned.

IV. Data access differs from permission to dispose of data

Maksim used a dataset for the project. That establishes access for a task, not authority to take a copy away, publish it or transfer it elsewhere. Conditions may involve agreements, research participants, institutions and acquisition. No dataset's rules or applicable law are determined here. Which resource, basis, purpose and authorising role concern the proposed action? Belief that one's contribution was treated unfairly cannot supply those answers. The access granted for analysis and the permission required for another purpose may differ even where the researcher performed much of the original work.

An authorship dispute does not turn people represented in data into material for a researcher's defence. Even if Maksim believes exclusion unfair, publishing original records to prove it needs separate grounds. Removing names guarantees neither that people cannot be recognised nor that disclosure is authorised. No evasion method or assurance of safe anonymisation is offered. A permitted description might address contribution without disclosing the dataset. Its suitability and recipients require actual checking, rather than selection solely for convenience in the dispute. A legitimate concern does not erase duties towards people outside it.

Data, analysis code, manuscript and method description may arise together under different conditions. Access to one establishes no rights over all others. The entire result cannot be declared the student's personal property or the supervisor's unconditional possession in advance. Such a general answer hides questions requiring an agreement, policy, funding conditions or specialist legal assessment. Where grounds remain unestablished, preserve the unknown. Moral confidence cannot supply an unchecked permission. Knowing which question remains unresolved is more accurate than treating every related file as governed by the same answer.

Preservation also differs from control. Deleting data, altering version history or withholding the only copy as leverage over a name can affect collaborators and research quality without proving authorship. Legitimate evidence recording needs a defined purpose. This article authorises no concealed archive of an entire project. To establish contribution, first examine the permissible extent, means and recipient's authority. Naming something evidence does not settle those conditions. Protecting a record and appropriating control over the shared resource are distinct actions, even where both are described as protecting one's work.

V. Funding, economic rights and authorship need different grounds

A supervisor obtained equipment and funds. This may be essential and deserve accurate recognition without establishing every form of authorship. ICMJE distinguishes funding acquisition and general supervision alone from sufficient authorship contribution. That is the specified editorial framework, not a verdict on this supervisor, who may also have contributed intellectually. Examine the actual combination of actions rather than including someone solely out of respect for a resource or excluding them for an administrative role. Dependence and contribution can coexist; recognising either does not settle every question about the other.

The separate economic-rights question needs care. WIPO's FAQ notes national employment exceptions to the general original-creator ownership starting point. WIPO FAQ. This supplies no verdict about Maksim's manuscript, raw data or code. Country, status and arrangements matter. Scientific attribution does not automatically identify every economic-right holder; an employment context does not describe every intellectual contribution. A general FAQ cannot decide a particular agreement or establish whether a particular resource is copyright protected. Those remain questions for actual grounds rather than conclusions from the contributor's rank.

Separate four statements: I performed this part; I should receive this attribution; I may use this material; I possess the file. Their answers may differ. Do not prove them circularly through each other. Naming a creator does not always authorise reproducing protected material, while permitted use makes no user its creator. This article assigns no licence or exception. It identifies which basis is missing before an action affecting others. A clear distinction can support a legitimate question without announcing that every right has already been established or that an unresolved claim permits unrestricted use.

A studentship, employment and separate contract should not be merged without examination. Project resources are not automatically personal payment for all future contributions, but study does not exclude real duties. Who received the resource, for how long and under which reporting and usage terms? An actual answer may constrain access or require agreement without meeting every expectation. Financial dependence should not silently replace authorship discussion or turn a methodological question into an unlimited debt. Here the precise arrangement matters more than a general claim that funding either purchases everything or creates no obligation whatsoever.

VI. A disputed conclusion differs from a status decision

Maksim doubts that an analysis supports one conclusion; a colleague sees the method differently. Disagreement alone establishes neither appropriation nor dishonesty nor breach. Specify the conclusion, grounds and uncertainty. Criticism may be warranted, mistaken or partly useful. Educational dependence does not make it automatically correct, and seniority does not make it automatically unsound. Research needs the substantive question considered in an appropriate form where conditions allow. A person's vulnerability deserves attention without becoming evidence that their interpretation must prevail over a colleague's on scientific grounds.

A supervisor may also assess progress, allocate resources or influence continuation of a position. That is another power. Changed access after disagreement makes chronology relevant without alone establishing retaliatory motive. Separate stated grounds, actual action and inferred cause. Neither every administrative limit is improper nor every invocation of rules sufficient. This article investigates no actual case. It preserves two questions: what about the scientific argument, and what grounds support changing a participant's position? One answer should not silently stand in for the other merely because the same people are involved.

If agreement with a conclusion really is demanded in exchange for credit or continued work, ordinary disagreement is not the whole description. An accurate reply nevertheless guarantees no protection. Maksim may need suitable procedural support rather than a universal call to argue publicly. Availability, independence, recipients and consequences require checking. Submission, consideration and correction differ; a publication correction need not restore a place or relationship. None can be promised through one piece of advice. The substantive question and a protection question may each remain important while requiring different help and authorities.

Acknowledging one's mistake need not mean accepting appropriation. A substantive correction may be necessary while attribution remains disputed. A warranted authorship claim also makes no analysis automatically right. Separating these matters avoids buying credit with invented certainty or using disagreement as sole proof of another's dishonesty. Each needs grounds and authority. An unresolved answer can be more honest than forced agreement existing only in a published byline. Serious collaboration does not require pretending every scientific and administrative question has the same answer or can be settled through the same signature.

VII. Appropriation needs a definite subject

Someone may mean an omitted name, inaccurate role description, insufficient attribution of text, unauthorised data transfer or disputed author order. These can overlap without being identical. A general label identifies neither what to establish nor what to correct. Maksim sees a changed contribution line; it does not establish every other event. Begin with the version and discrepancy. This limit takes the question seriously without expanding uncertainty into broader accusation. A narrower established problem can deserve attention in its own right, rather than needing proof of every possible form of misconduct before it counts.

An inaccurate statement may arise without intentional seizure of work. A form used an old plan, an update failed to reach the corresponding author or an altered file is not the submission version. These are fictional possibilities, not excuses for an actual action. Deliberate exclusion is another possibility. Available facts should distinguish them rather than a convenient good-or-bad-supervisor story. A corrected working line is a specific result. It proves neither that the original concern was invented nor that all later documents are correct. A correction matters without rewriting the entire past around it.

Citation, usage permission and byline also differ. A source may be named while disclosure remains unauthorised; lawful use does not make someone the creator; a co-author may lack authority to publish a dataset alone. WIPO distinguishes permission, licence conditions and applicable exceptions in discussing use. This is a general orientation, not individual authorisation. Context matters before calling every textual similarity plagiarism or every citation complete protection from questions. The allegation's actual subject, relevant material and proposed action still need their own grounds rather than a general answer about honesty.

Precision helps in seeking assistance. Instead of proving an entire environment dishonest, an appropriately shareable discrepancy may identify the version, inaccurate description, governing criterion and missing answer. The recipient may lack authority over everything; establish their scope where possible. No single destination is recommended for all institutions. ICMJE assigns unresolved authorship investigation to institutions rather than editors as arbiters; a project's actual procedure still needs clarification. A general recommendation does not prove the channel's independence, access, response or ability to protect a dependent participant from every consequence of raising the question.

VIII. Grounds for a claim do not authorise every private history

A permissible work extract, agreement or specific version history may matter. Even legitimately accessible material cannot necessarily be sent to any recipient. Purpose, access scope and contents remain relevant. Do not copy a whole project or correspondence against every future possibility. Confirmation should fit a definite question. If no suitable form is available yet, name that limitation instead of disguising it through advice to keep absolutely everything regardless of conditions. The wish to preserve evidence neither establishes permissions nor removes obligations towards people represented in it or contributors outside the dispute.

Maksim's account can be accurate and incomplete. He knows his work without necessarily seeing a colleague's contribution elsewhere. An unknown part does not establish that nothing was done. Another confident account does not cancel Maksim's actual result either. Relevant grounds need examination. Junior status requires no flawless speech before attention; senior status makes no explanation automatically sufficient. Both people's dignity can coexist with checking a document and admitting limits of knowledge. Neither emotional confidence nor difficulty explaining a complex history determines whether a particular contribution statement is correct.

Threats make help broader than correcting a list. Public statements, complaints, information gathering and departure guarantee neither safety nor preserved status, funds or future employment. Courage need not prove authorship through risk. Support must fit the place, role and circumstances; a channel's name establishes neither confidentiality nor independence. Suitable help may also be sought while the question remains unclear. A person need not establish the entire breach alone before acknowledging a costly decision and difficulty assessing the grounds. The need for help is compatible with uncertainty rather than evidence against the claim.

Supporters have limits too. Reading differs from independent investigation; agreement with one point from confirming every accusation; drafting a request from securing its result. Definite help may clarify a criterion or permissible next step while remaining limited. It need not create complete independence. Do not build another promise on an unreceived decision or make support conditional on immediately following someone else's supposedly exclusive defence plan. Assistance should retain its actual extent, with outcomes checked separately. A useful conversation can matter without becoming authority over the researcher's whole subsequent course of action.

IX. A corrected line differs from a restored professional path

One possible outcome is correction before submission, confirmed in a saved version. It does not automatically settle byline order, data permissions or final publication. Alternatively, a name is added while a substantive doubt remains. Credit does not replace work on that conclusion. Or the question stays open. A calm conversation and a general promise to examine it later do not make it resolved. Each outcome has its own scope, and a promised action should not be recorded as an actual change merely because the promise sounded convincing or came from a respected role.

After publication, discussing a correction, submitting a request, publishing a change and updating other systems are different events. No journal's procedure is assigned here. The point is to avoid claiming an achieved result from a started action. Even a real correction guarantees no continued funds, restored access or colleagues' trust. Those may need other decisions and time. A person may recognise one achievement without declaring everything well or devaluing it because other matters remain difficult. An accurate account can contain both progress and an unresolved dependence at the same time.

Leaving the group does not automatically erase contribution and usage questions. Continuing also establishes no consent to every previous description. Moving, losing access, ending an agreement and approving further use require separate grounds. Retained competence does not immediately become earnings. Relationships may remain valuable or painful regardless of a line in a paper. Neither departure nor recognition requires immediate freedom from distress or a conclusion that every collaborative year was mistaken. Formal position and lived aftermath may change differently without invalidating the particular result that did occur.

Maksim may accurately report a confirmed analysis, one answered criterion or no permitted means of transmitting information yet. That is neither a final verdict on a person nor proof of helplessness. A definite result supports another decision only within its scope. It need not promise control over the future, and complete control is not required before recognising any movement. Participation in research, human dignity and actual authority remain separate questions. Recognising limited progress can preserve both responsibility and a realistic view of what remains dependent on other people's actions.

X. Avoiding appropriation does not require surrendering legitimate credit

Laozi's chapter 10 image concerns the Dao's production without possession. It is no copyright law or instruction for junior researchers to disappear modestly from publication. The limited comparison asks whether supporting growth requires unbounded ownership of people and results. An ethical image cancels no actual arrangement. It cannot decide rights or require another to donate work to whoever quotes it. Historical language may sharpen a question without supplying the missing institutional evidence, permission or criterion that a modern decision still needs. The image's subject and contemporary application must remain distinct.

Analects II.15 connects learning and thought in another historical setting, not a journal policy. A narrow comparison asks whether repeating a formula is sufficient understanding of work one signs. Understanding supplies no ready contribution metric or proof that a dissenting junior is always correct. The texts are not combined into one scientific theory. Both can interrupt an overly general claim, while project facts and actual rules still require separate examination. Their philosophical value does not depend on pretending they anticipated modern authorship, database permissions or research governance in their present form.

For fictional Maksim, the next question may concern one role statement and the version awaiting approval. Someone else may need material-use permission or grounds for restricted access. Precision guarantees no fair outcome but avoids first having to solve academic power in its entirety. A person can acknowledge a supervisor's help, take shared work seriously and limit consent to its description. Credit can be defended without appropriating colleagues' unknown work or exposing research participants to win a dispute. These distinctions permit responsibility without demanding unlimited compliance or claiming unlimited rights in return.

Collaboration requires grounds for definite actions rather than absence of every difference. Names, access, funds and human worth form no single scale where the highest position takes everything. Clarity supplies no absent resource and controls no other person's decision. Its possible use is preserving a truthful question and conditions for further participation. A researcher can need help without losing the right to think and seek recognition without promising complete independence or an infallible perspective. Neither dependence nor uncertainty has to turn a particular contribution into someone else's unrestricted possession.

What this means in practice

Where circumstances permit, choose one matter: byline, contribution statement, conclusion or material use. Identify the version and action. Separate your work, known contributions from others and unknown parts. An overall judgment of the supervisor or group is unnecessary as a starting point.

Establish the applicable framework. Editorial criteria, role descriptions, economic rights, data permission and funding conditions answer different questions. A role list awards no authorship, a signature authorises no dataset transfer and a file establishes no ownership. An unclear basis is an enquiry result, not permission to act freely.

Identify permissible confirmation and a suitable recipient. Do not copy the entire project, alter history or disclose personal data to establish a claim. Preparation, delivery, reply, corrected version and published correction differ. Recognise the actual result without extending it to every other connection.

Threats need separate protection and support consideration. This exercise guarantees neither safe disagreement nor recognised authorship, a place, access, funding or earnings. It may clarify what needs examination and on which grounds, preserving responsibility for one's work without authority to appropriate anyone else's.

Key quotation

“Learning without thought is labour lost…”

Confucius, The Analects, II.15, James Legge. First short fragment of a paired statement; the second warns about thought without learning. Verified context. This is neither a byline criterion nor a judgment of anyone's personality.

Connections between traditions

Comparison Question Limit
Laozi 10.3 / Analects II.15 Supporting growth and understanding work exceed a claim to everything Different historical frameworks, not shared scientific authorship policy
Laozi's image / fictional group Does providing resources create unlimited authority? Author's contemporary question, not a property-rights decision
Confucius / ICMJE responsibility What does someone understand and endorse? Comparison replaces no actual editorial criterion

Three bounded comparisons; agreement from other traditions has not been invented to meet a quota.
